Key Themes from AASA 2025
Dr. Peter Stiepleman, Yondr Senior Advisor
We joined educators, administrators, and thought leaders from across the country at the AASA National Conference on Education 2025 in New Orleans to explore the evolving challenges and opportunities facing educators today. From managing distractions in the classroom to promoting student and staff well-being, one theme was clear: schools are looking for practical solutions that help students thrive in an increasingly digital world. Here are five key themes that captured the attention of attendees:
Leadership in Turbulent Times
Superintendents are navigating increasing political pressures, misinformation, and shifting public narratives. Speakers emphasized the crucial role of proactively sharing the positive stories of schools, ensuring that others do not shape disruptive or harmful narratives. By controlling their own narrative, superintendents can protect the integrity of education and strengthen trust within their communities.Student and Staff Well-being
Mental health and wellness took center stage, with a focus on creating supportive environments. Sessions like “Promoting a Culture of Well-being: JED Foundation’s District Mental Health Initiative” and “Whole Community Wellness: Empowering Students, Families, and Staff” highlighted strategies for maintaining well-being, especially in the post-pandemic era.Innovation in Education
AI and new staffing models are transforming the way schools operate. Sessions such as "Superintendents Superpowering AI" and "Next Education Workforce" showcased innovative solutions designed to enhance learning and address workforce challenges. Rather than fearing AI, educators should embrace its potential to support students—particularly those who may need a thought partner or editor when developing and sharing their ideas. Just as tutoring has long been a resource for academic success, AI has the potential to bridge learning gaps, if implemented thoughtfully. The Future of Public Education
Ensuring sustainability and equity in public education remains a top priority. Sessions like “Stop Chasing Isolated Initiatives” and “Calling Public Schooling a Bipartisan American Value” underscored the importance of advocacy and setting clear, collective goals. By focusing on the shared value of student success, communities can come together to build stronger, more effective systems. True progress happens when leaders rise above the noise and focus on consistent inquiry, regular communication, and collaboration with all stakeholders to drive meaningful change.Managing Digital Distraction: A Growing Priority
The issue of cellphone distractions in schools is more urgent than ever. I was honored to lead a session on phone-free education, alongside administrators Christy Lobao and Carol Kruser, who shared the positive outcomes their districts experienced after implementing the Yondr Phone-Free Schools Program. The discussion highlighted not only the benefits of reducing classroom distractions but also the importance of engaging communities and stakeholders in implementing such a significant change. You can read the full recap of our session on the AASA website.
As we look to the future of education, the insights shared at AASA NCE 2025 remind us that progress comes through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to supporting students and educators. Creating focused, distraction-free learning environments is a key part of that vision.
